Textured and Acid Stained Concrete

Acid stain is not a paint or coating agent, rather, it's a colouring process involving a chemical reaction on a cementitious material. A solution made with water, acid and inorganic salts reacts with minerals already present in the concrete, the result of this reaction is colour. It works very well on new or old concrete, and we've seen impressive results over decorative polymer overlays as well as self-levelling products. Acid stain is a very durable product if properly protected with sealer or wax, and it can be applied to both interiors and exteriors.

What makes acid stain concrete so attractive?

Acid Stained Concrete gives the appearance of a mottled variegated, marble look. It creates beautiful colours on concrete, mostly earth tone browns, reddish browns, and greens. We can also create other shades by mixing and matching other available colours in the Artistique colour range. Never expect acid stained concrete to be uniform or have an even tone, you'll get different reactions from slab to slab and even on the same job you may see different colouration patterns. Acid stain can be applied to most types of concrete flooring including vertical cementitious surfaces.

Polished Concrete

Polished Concrete is a term that describes a glossy, decorative concrete option that leaves the concrete surface finish 'exposed' yet polished in appearance. The process of polishing is a multi-step process, and with this level of versatility, it allows a customer to choose the level of sheen (satin to high-gloss) to suit the application. It also offers a good alternative for customers who cannot afford (or don't wish to pay for) the more luxurious marble and granite floors, but want that same high class, mirror-like finish. Even with this high-gloss appearance, the floor is no more slippery than an average floor tile, and is extremely resistant to heavy foot traffic, furniture scratches and staining from spills; a main reason why polished floors are often selected as the floor surface in a warehouse. A polished floor also requires the application of a surface sealer or wax to protect and add a lustre to the finish.

In the home, polished concrete floors are quite energy efficient and will assist with keeping the room temperature warm on a cool night, yet offer cool relief on a warmer sunny day. To keep the floor clean, all a customer needs to use is a duster or a mop with a neutral cleaner. As the floors surface is virtually smooth and less porois, it is harder for dust to become trapped. With regular cleaning, these floors will remain durable for many years.

Polished Exposed Aggregate finishes can be achieved by using liquid polishes and latex coatings but are most commonly achieved by progressively grinding (with finer grades of grinding pads) to expose the aggregates. During this process, the final floor surface is polished and it also enables the ability to achieve pebble, rock or marble type floor appearances for a greatly reduced cost. We can add various colours and stains to achieve almost any desired effect. Timber, tile, brass and zinc components may be used to create paterns and glass can also be added for that translucant effect.

• Keep your surfaces clean, including sweeping off leaves as they may stain.
• Wash or hose surfaces regularly to remove loose dirt.
• Clean with detergent - DO NOT use any solvent based, or chlorine based cleaners on the surface.
• Remove oil type stains immediately using a mild degreaser. Wash or hose afterwards.

Acid Stain Concrete FAQs

1. Is acid stain concrete slip resistant?
There are a large variety of techniques used to create a slip resistant surface. Please discuss these with your contractor.

2. Will the colour fade?
The pigments used are inorganic metal oxides, which are extremely UV and chemical resistant. A maximum of 5% shading variation may occur over a period of 5 years, but this is barely detectable to the human eye. We recommend that a quality UV protect sealer be applied.

3. What are the advantages of acid stain concrete versus bricks, stones, or tiles?
Acid stain concrete can be reinforced to serve any structural need or purpose. Acid stain concrete is a more versatile option that offers multiple colours, patterns and textures to compliment the existing structure. It is a lower cost, lower maintenance product and as concrete is the base, weeds will not appear and undulation will not occur.

4. How often do I need to reseal?
Re-sealing is usually recommended 12 months after the initial application.

Concrete Driveways

Gone are the days where you had gravel or pebble driveways. Today, concrete driveways are growing more in popularity and many people are looking towards texture stained driveways as an alternative to paved driveways made with brick, stone pavers or natural stone. These stained driveways provide a very good looking and low maintenance solution while giving the appearance of a paving or pebbles.

Why choose a Concrete Driveway?

A driveway paved with bricks, while hardwearing and attractive, can be very costly due to the amount of materials and labour required. Stone driveways are also hardwearing but are high-maintenance due to the need to re-apply a top-grade sealer regularly to protect the stones, thus making them costly. Concrete has now become the most popular driveway material. It's hardwearing, weather resistant and easy to maintain. You can have a myriad finishes including acid stained concrete patterns, pebble and stone patterns, as well as customised colours. You will also need to apply a sealer to concrete but much less regularly than stones.
